Reflecting on Neuroinclusion's First Six Months: Creating A Truly Inclusive Workplace and Therapeutic Space

In just six months, Neuroinclusion has made remarkable strides in creating a neurodiversity-affirming space, fostering growth and inclusivity for clients, families, educators, professionals, and the wider community. This Perth-based organisation provides neurodiversity-affirming occupational therapy (OT) services, clinical mentoring, and workshops designed to support neurodiversity in a way that allows individuals to thrive. Neuroinclusion is not just about providing services; it is about cultivating an environment where every neurodivergent individual feels valued, understood, and empowered to reach their full potential.

Here are some highlights of our first half-year, showcasing the impact we have made:

  • We proudly welcomed 8 new staff members to our team, significantly enhancing our capabilities and expertise, allowing us to provide more comprehensive support to a larger number of individuals in need of our services.

  • Throughout this period, 182 clients engaged with our diverse range of services, reflecting our growing reach and the increasing demand for neurodiversity-affirming practices in the community.

  • Of these clients, 42 accessed OT via telehealth, demonstrating our commitment to making our services accessible to those who may face geographical or mobility challenges.

  • We completed 98 initial OT sessions, ensuring that each client received the tailored support they required to begin their journey towards improved well-being and functionality.

  • Our efforts have positively impacted 63 paediatric clients and 35 adults through targeted OT sessions, highlighting our dedication to supporting individuals across all age groups.

  • In total, we delivered an impressive 153 hours of one-on-one therapy and mentoring, providing personalised guidance and support that is essential for the growth and development of our clients.

  • Additionally, we mentored 12 external occupational therapists from various regions across Australia, sharing our knowledge and practices to help elevate the standard of neurodiversity-affirming care nationally.

  • We had the opportunity to facilitate a workshop at the prestigious National Occupational Therapy Conference of Australia, where we shared our insights and experiences with fellow professionals, advocating for the importance of neurodiversity-affirming practices in occupational therapy.

  • Our dedication to individualised client care is reflected in the preparation of 14 detailed OT reports, which serve as essential documents in communication, funding applications, tracking progress and tailoring interventions to meet individual needs.

  • We actively engaged with the broader community by joining 5 different podcasts as guests, where we shared our knowledge and expertise in neurodiversity-affirming care, reaching a wider audience and fostering understanding.

  • To ensure our team remains at the forefront of best practices, we facilitated 2 Team Professional Development Trainings for therapists, focusing on the latest methodologies and approaches in the field.

  • Our social media presence has flourished, with our Instagram account growing to over 30,000 followers, allowing us to spread awareness and connect with a vibrant community interested in neurodiversity.

  • Moreover, we have taken significant steps to expand our physical presence by starting to sublease a clinic space in Fremantle, providing a welcoming environment for our clients and their families.

Founded by Claire Britton, a neurodivergent occupational therapist with nearly a decade of experience, Neuroinclusion champions a holistic, strengths-based approach to supporting neurodivergent individuals. Claire’s vision of creating a nurturing environment for both clients and practitioners has been the cornerstone of this thriving initiative. In her words, this initial phase "has been an honour to create a workplace and therapeutic team that is true to its values and celebrates neurodiversity holistically in every possible way." This commitment to authenticity and inclusivity resonates throughout all of our programs and interactions, ensuring that every individual feels seen and respected.

In these six months, our unwavering commitment to advocacy, acceptance, and empowerment has solidified Neuroinclusion as a trusted ally in our neurodiverse community. We are not merely providing services; we are actively paving the way for society and workplaces to embrace all neurotypes, fostering an environment where everyone can thrive and be truly included. This foundational work is crucial in dismantling barriers and misconceptions surrounding neurodiversity, advocating for systemic change that benefits all.

Here’s to continued growth, collaboration, and innovation in 2025 and beyond, as we strive to make a lasting impact in the lives of those we serve!
